COME 2021, taxi operators in India may allowed to buy only zero-emission vehicles, as part of the Union government’s endeavor to strive for an all electric fleet by 2030. To begin with, the union government is inviting proposals for Rs 105 Cr grants from cities with a population of over 10 lakh to enable them to adopt electric vehicles in multi-modal public transport. The grants are being offered through thee FAME India scheme. Indian original equipment manufacturer(OEMS) are now gearing their entire ecosystem the switch to electric vehicles. Technology is still a barrier though and electric cars would rule Indian roads, should a low-cost, effective solution emanate. Till then an all- electric car population remains a distant dream.
